Join our new network for schoolyard-garden educators

Did you know that over 90 schools in Charlotte Mecklenburg and Gaston County have active or currently are in the planning stages for schoolyard gardens? Soon there will be a new way for the people behind those gardens to learn from and support one another.
The Catawba River District is partnering with Mecklenburg Health Department and many others to create the Green Teacher Network, a quarterly networking meeting where teachers and educators can network, receive relevant information about gardening and complete a hands-on project which they can take back to the classroom with them.

Come to our first meeting Aug. 20

The initial meeting is set for 9:30 a.m.-noon Aug. 20 at First Ward Creative Arts Academy, 715 N. Caldwell St. in downtown Charlotte.  If you would like to participate, please RSVP to me, Edna Chirico, at echirico@catawbariverdistrict.org.

What will we do?

What is the Green Teacher Network?

The Green Teacher Network’s primary goal is to enhance school gardening and to support educators and their school communities in establishing and using school gardens. To do this, the Green Teacher Network will establish and facilitate a collaboration of educators throughout Mecklenburg County who meet quarterly.  At these meetings, the Network will collaborate on enhancing hands-on learning, supporting local foods, and expanding current health and wellness initiatives through school gardening.

Who should join the Green Teacher Network?

All teachers from public, private, charter and home schools are invited.  In addition, educators directly involved in the local food and growing economy are invited to participate. Schools that have (or are planning to have) school gardens are encouraged to have multiple teachers attend to facilitate planning, teamwork and support.
